Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center

Towering trees, black wrought-iron fencing and huge gates lend a regal feel to the site of our nation's first presidential center. The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is located on 25 acres of wooded land that were part of our 19th President's estate. Within the confines of this land, given the name Spiegel Grove by President Hayes, visitors can tour the 31-room Victoria home of Hayes and his wife, Lucy. The pair retired here following their residence in the White House and both spent their last days in the elegant home, which still contains original family furnishings.

A few steps from the Hayes Home are the Hayes Museum and Library. Two floors of the structure are filled with artifacts relating to President Hayes' life, including numerous Civil War and Native American items. Each year the Museum's traveling exhibit area plays host to several national exhibits, as well as exclusive exhibits assembled by the Center's staff. The Hayes Library occupies the third floor of the building. The research facility is free and open to the public six days a week. It contains extensive genealogical and local history resources.

Spiegel Grove also has much to offer. Visitor's can make the short walk to the Hayes tomb, final resting site of President Hayes, his wife, son and daughter-in-law. The paved path leading to the tomb is itself historical. It was part of the Scioto Indian Trail and the Harrison Trail, the latter was a key supply route during the War of 1812.

Open Monday - Saturday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sunday and Holidays, Noon - 5 p.m. 1-800-998-7737.

Hayes Civil War Encampment

Each year, more than 500 Confederate and Union reenactors set up camp on the grounds of the Hayes Presidential Center to recreate the life and trials of America's Civil War. Canvas tents, campfires and wool uniforms abound. Music, food and merchandise of the era bring the past to life. A reenactment of a Civil War battle fashion show, military demonstrations and a Civil War Ball are just a few of the events planned.

Held annually the first full weekend in October, the encampment is a remembrance of the birthday of Rutherford B. Hayes, our 19th President. 1-800-998-7737.
